Behind the Veil: Victorian Mourning and Spirit Hoaxes
Step into the shadowy world of Victorian grief, ghosts, and deception at this year’s Maxey After Dark event. Explore how 19th-century Americans coped with loss and how grief gave rise to an obsession with the spirit world. From mourning jewelry made of hair to trick tables and spirit rapping, discover how belief and showmanship collided in Victorian parlors. Highlights include: • A staged séance scene (with a few harmless “spirit” surprises) • Victorian mourning customs & objects • Halloween-themed parlor games • Hairwork and spiritualism artifact displays • Family-friendly atmosphere with a historical twist This is an educational experience. We’ll reveal how mediums used tricks to simulate spirit contact and why people were so eager to believe. Admission is $5 per person.
