Stroll N Roll ... From Paducah to Paris, Texas
Stroll n Roll…. From Paducah to Paris City, ST- Local Community and the Red River Valley Tourism Association has joined with the Wichita Falls Museum Coalition to celebrate the 2012 Stroll N Roll. This free event will be held Saturday, Stroll N Roll will feature over 30 area museums and attractions. The city of Paris will have two museums participating in Stroll N Roll, the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site and the Lamar County Historical Museum, making the event a great opportunity for citizens to explore the area’s local history. The Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a historic house museum, is located at 812 South Church Street. Free guided tours will be given on the hour, every hour starting at 9:00 a.m. The last tour will be at 4:00 p.m. Along with free tours, visitors to the site will be able to participate in crafts and activities on the lawn as they learn about customs from the late 1800s and early 1900s, such as the use of calling cards. Visitors will also be able to walk the grounds and enjoy the formal garden, which was recently re-planted with assistance from the Friends of the Maxey House, on the north side of the house. Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was built in 1868 in the High Victorian Italianate-style as the home of Samuel Bell Maxey and his wife Marilda. Maxey served in the U.S.-Mexico War, was a Confederate general and two-term U.S. Senator. Members of the Maxey family lived in the house until 1966 and the restored house reflects almost 100 years of their continuous use.
